Arkas and Zottornik push their evil plan: Franz is kidnapped and taken to Schracken Fortress in a mask. From now on, Dr. Fritz take on the role of crown prince. When the latter learns of the full scope of the mistaken game, he refuses to take part. But Zottornik puts the doctor under pressure: If Fritz fails in his role, Franz will be murdered! Fritz reluctantly allows himself to be smuggled into the apartments of the imperial family. Despite some difficulties, nobody notices at first that something is wrong. On a trip to the Prater, Fritz falls in love with Helene. As Empress Sophie prepares her supposed son for the handover of the throne, following Zottornik's instructions, the fake prince makes an incredible declaration: he will marry Helene and appoint Zottornik chancellor again.
