After their reconciliation, Franz and Sissi return to Schönbrunn. While Franz is being overwhelmed with reproaches because of his secret journey, Sissi and Mathilde immediately take care of the orphans. She is appalled by Sophie's plans to close the home. An equestrian competition creates new excitement. Franz' brother Karl is to achieve victory on behalf of the imperial family. In order to increase his chances, Sissi puts her stallion Wirbelwind at his disposal. When Karl is so badly injured in an accident that he cannot start, Sissi decides that she will take Karl's place.
