Espilar, who wields a spiral-bladed sabre, lures Dankichi and Dr. Elder outside and attacks them. When he demands Kenshin's whereabouts, Kenshin soon arrives, having deduced that a message sent to Dr. Elder was a trap. Despite using numerous thrusts and eventually his fastest attack, Espilar is soundly defeated. To his shock, Kenshin does not kill him; knowing that a samurai's katana is his soul, he sees his sakabatō is indicative of his new ways.
