James is assigned to work with Edward, but James thinks Edward is too slow, and he ignores Edward's warnings to be careful on the icy tracks. As a result of his rushing, James derails and crashes into a snowdrift. The Fat Controller allows James to deliver the presents train on the condition he promises to go slowly and become Edward's back engine.
