The platoons confront Karen at the Sumeragi Mausoleum and Karen reveals that he attempted to travel 2000 years in the past to absorb the power of Yakumo Sumeragi, a fellow Red Strings user, believing he could use that power to save Alice. Unfortunately, every time he tried to save Alice, he failed, and so he transferred his memories to an alternate version of himself so that version could save Alice in his place.
