He rowed out into the lagoon in a Ben Gunn boat, but found it difficult to steer due to the heavy seas and was swept away. After fending off a shark attack, he finds exhausted that evening that the current is pushing him back towards shore. He still reaches the Hispaniola and actually manages to cut the ropes.
