After Kenshin scares them with his sword, Sanosuke explains that he is a fighter-for-hire and is interested in seeing Kenshin's strength. Although Kenshin rejects the offer, Sanosuke later finds the Hiruma brothers, who ask for his help to kill Kenshin. Sanosuke is initially reluctant until learning he is from the Ishin Shishi. Sanosuke once again challenges Kenshin who accepts upon discovering he was hired by the Hirumas. Using his large lance-like zanbatō, Sanosuke tries to kill his opponent, but Kenshin easily dodges his moves.
