When Callum and Rayla arrive and explain their quest, Janai forbids them entry to Lux Aurea because Viren's attack infused the city with dark magic, making it uninhabitable. Despite this, Callum, Rayla, Amaya, Gren and Kazi decide (with Janai's blessing) to find the library. Karim finds himself joined by Pharos, the former high priest of his people, who joins his cause. Viren finally wakes from his coma, though he enters a catatonic state.
