After the 999 leaves the planet, the queen dies. Soon after the babies all die as well, as they can't survive out in space. Only one survives, but is quite ill, so Maetel has it sent back to the Planet in a small shuttle. It is revealed that the babies didn't eat Tetsuro and the others because of his reluctance to shoot them.
