They become separated; Pinoko befriends an Aussie, Black Jack walks for days. Black Jack contracts the deadly plague, and realizes it is actually a parasite (an Echinococcus, a tapeworm, which causes echinococcosis or hydatid disease). He removes it by performing surgery on himself inside a plastic tent.
