Saki deduces that Rijin hypnotized the students into forgetting their mantras, which are necessary to invoke their Cantus. Because Saki had tricked Satoru to reveal his mantra in their childhood, she uses the induction ceremony to recite his mantra and recover his Cantus. Instead of fleeing, Satoru decides to fight the Ground Spider colony and has some success. Aided by Squealer and the surviving Robber Fly warriors, the group survives several enemy ambushes. Satoru begins to show signs of fatigue from overusing his abilities, but despite Saki's protests, he continues until they encounter a massive army of Queerats.
