Myne awakens in Freida's bed and notices a shattered bracelet on her wrist. Freida walks in and tells her how the bracelet was a magical item that absorbs the Devouring fever, but that her illness will soon return within a year. When Myne asks where she can get more, Freida reveals that her family bought every faulty one in the city and that the real bracelets are carried by nobles. Freida gives her an ultimatum: make a contract with the nobles and live but leave her family behind, or stay with her family and die. She also reveals that she has a contract to be a future concubine to a noble and is at peace with the decision...
