Two teenage girls, Sage and Rosemary, are excited to enter High Guardian Academy, in Lyngarth, while their parents encourage them and wish them well. They bring Chompy with them, traveling to the academy on a bus of some kind, and reflect on seeing their hometown of Pebble from afar. They cut the line to get onto the train to school, with Sage and Rosemary riding a broom together. They stay with Sage's cousins Anise and Aloe in Lyngarth, and soon go to sleep. Rosemary has a nightmare about her brother, dad, and mother, with her mom disappearing and leaving the sword behind...
